Media Replace File extends the Media module to allow a user to replace a file with a file of same mime type. The File ID (and thus media.module entity ID) remains the same, so all entities referencing this file object will continue to work.
The project was born out of a need to replace image files without replacing the meta data about that file/media entity (http://drupal.org/node/1123570).
