Using Drupal's node_operations api, modules can supply mass operation changes for nodes. However in some cases, your node library can get so big that 50 or so nodes you can pick at a time, just becomes too time consuming.
Background node operations uses the filtering you know from the /admin/content/node page, when you are happy with your filtering, you can supply the amount of nodes to be processes in each batch run, and create the operations as a background job. At the operation overview you can follow the progress of the jobs, and see the estimation of completion.
