What is this used for?

As for paper–based information, all electronic–based information needs to be marked with an
appropriate protective marking. This module adds the option for a user to set a default Email Protective Marking, such as [SEC=UNCLASSIFIED], appended to the end of the subject line for all outgoing emails sent using drupal_mail() on your site.

Why?

The Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM) recomends the prevention of unmarked emails. This can result in system emails sent from govCMS being blocked by an agency, such as workflow, forms, account notifications, etc. Therefore an email which contains information that is transmitted from an Australian Government system is to be either security classified and identified by a protective marking showing the level required, assigned a Dissemination Limiting Marker (DLM) or, when appropriate, a caveat. The presence or absence of a classification will not affect a document's status under the FOI Act.

Additional requirements and guidance for email protective markings can be found in the
Email Protective Marking Standard for the Australian Government on the Department of Finance's Authentication and Identity Management page.
