This is a module that is meant to cleanly address the issue with Entity Embed that prevents images from being rendered as links:

This module is completely unmaintained, and will hopefully become unnecessary in the future once the issue is fixed.
Note that this is a personal project to fix a pet issue. I will not be accepting patches myself, but I grant permission for anyone to take over maintainership of this module. Note also that this module will be obsolete once the above issue is fixed.
