As of October 1st, 2011, Search Lucene API has reached “end of life†and is deprecated in favor of other projects. For Java-less Drupal 7 solutions, consider using the core Search module coupled with Faceted Navigation for Search or the Zend Lucene project coupled with Search API. Acquia also provides a hosted Solr service which eliminates the difficulties of maintaining a local Solr instance.
The advancements made in the 7.x-3.x version of Search Lucene API will be ripped out and posted to the Search Tools project so they can be leveraged by other search modules. For more details as to why this project has reached "end of life", refer to the Bye Bye, Search Lucene API! post on G.D.O.
