The View Mode Modal module let's you use entity view modes inside CTools modal. (You can link one view mode to another view mode, which opens in a modal).

Once the module is enabled, if you go to the "Manage Display" tab for an entity, you should see a new settings called Modal. There you can set the target view mode.
Target view mode is which view mode to open in the modal. eg on a teaser view mode, you can set the target view mode to be full. When you view the teaser, it'll be rendered as a link that on click opens a the full mode in a modal.
