The Welcome Gate is a focused interruption of a very specific set of visitors to your web site that has been demonstrated to dramatically increase email list opt-in rates. Specifically, the Welcome Gate interrupts visits only to your front page, if the visitor has not visited your web site in the last year, and presents them with a case for why they should sign up for your newsletter. As long as a visitor hits your front page within a year, the cookie resets the countdown. It's not a modal pop-up; it uses PHP to check for a cookie and then switch locations before the home page is loaded, so the visitor doesn't see your front page and then get taken away from it.
