Drush submodule is a Drush extension that interfaces with Git and GitHub to streamline and simplify working with Drupal and its modules when using git submodules. This is not the same as using the default Drush submodule feature, it has much more functionality.

This extension is still very much under development and is NOT ready for use.

Drush submodule is a Drush extension that interfaces with Git and GitHub to streamline and simplify working with Drupal and its modules when using git submodules. This is not the same as using the default Drush submodule feature, it has much more functionality.

This extension is still very much under development and is NOT ready for use.

Example commands:

  • drush submodule add --tag=7.x-3.x-rc4 admin_menu
    • This command adds the admin_menu as a Git submodule and checks out the 7.x-3.x-rc4 release.
  • drush submodule add --url=git@github.com:some_user/some_repo
    • This command adds some_repo as a Git submodule. It will also query GitHub and get the read-only clone URL to set for fetching (so that others who may not be authorized can clone it) and all gets the ssh URL and sets it as the push URL so that you can still commit changes if you have the proper access permissions.
  • drush submodule customize --access=xxxxapikeyxxx admin_menu
    • Unfortunately, sometimes we can't just use contrib modules out-of-the-box or we need to use a patched version that its maintainer won't commit. This command will fork the module and set up a public or private (if you have a paid account) repository on GitHub.com for you, it will then move that module out of sites/all/modules/contrib into sites/all/modules/custom so that you know what modules need special attention.
